Lesachtal is not a single attraction but a whole day to look, pause and savour: steep mountain farms, small villages, larch meadows, churches, crafts and a cultural landscape still actively farmed.

Maria Luggau brings together almost everything Lesachtal stands for: five working watermills, a mill museum, pilgrimage basilica, Servite monastery, farm shop and the village’s cultivated landscape.

Lesachtal bread-making has been on Austria’s list of intangible UNESCO cultural heritage since 2010. It includes grain cultivation, milling knowledge, baking in home ovens and the related care of the cultural landscape.

This short loop visits five old, still working watermills and the mill museum, then continues through Oberluggau past the monastery and basilica to the farm shop.

Weissensee is a perfect day trip: combine lakeside paths, boat trips, small swimming spots and mountain scenery as you please.

Lienz is an easy town outing: main square, old town, cafés and shopping. Above it stands Bruck Castle, once the residence of the Counts of Gorizia and now a museum.

Cross Plöcken Pass and you are soon in Italy. Tolmezzo is Carnia’s main town, with small squares, cafés, shops and a museum.

Venzone is a historic small town entirely enclosed by walls, and one of Friuli’s most distinctive places.

Aquileia is a UNESCO World Heritage Site for its Roman excavations and early Christian mosaics. Continue to Grado on the Adriatic afterwards.

Palmanova was planned as a star-shaped fortress town by the Republic of Venice. Its square, streets and fortifications still reveal that layout today.
